The Unique Identification Authority of India was created to issue Unique Identification Numbers (UID) under Aadhaar to all the residents of India. The Aadhaar is a unique identification number to be issued to all residents of India. Intending to set up a robust system to eliminate duplicate/fake identities cost-effectively, supported by verification and authentication, the government introduced the Aadhaar.
Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Vide its gazette notification, the government revised the allocation of business rules to attach the UIDAI to the MeitY. Prior to its establishment as a statutory authority, UIDAI was functioning as an attached office of NITI Aayog. The Unique Identification Authority of India is a statutory authority established under the provisions of the Aadhaar Act, 2016 on 12 July 2016 by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
